Ipomoea, description, cultivation and application

Gardeners, who use vertical landscaping in landscape design, will have a good morning glory.

This blooming liana densely wraps around the support and even in the absence of buds looks very decorative due to the dense foliage. Ipomoea flowers look like gentle funnel-shaped gramophone, resembling a symbiosis of nasturtium and fragrant tobacco.

This is a one-year curly Vynukov family plant. His homeland is Mexico and tropical America. With quality care, the cultivation of morning glory is possible in the middle lane.

What does the ipomoea garden flower look like (with photos)

The plant reaches a length of up to 5 M. The leaves are ovate-heart-shaped, dull green, but beautiful, and the foliage is dense.

As can be seen in the photo, flowers are a funnel-shaped ipomoea, large (up to 10 cm) are picturesquely painted:

The corolla is yellow-white at the base, and the limb is pinkish at first, and then sky blue.

Each flower is revealed only in the morning - up to 12-13 hours. But in cloudy weather, flowers are open throughout the day. Flowering is abundant and due to the abundance of flowers - long.

See what the red and blue ipomoea looks like on these photos:

Faded flowers fold into a tube that is no longer blue, but crimson. Therefore, the specific name of the Ipomoea is red-blue. And this is not the only known species. There are at least two more, with pubescent leaves.

Ipomoea "Lyra"evergreen tropical liana with pubescent young shoots and gentle leaves pubescence from the underside.

The flowers are beautiful - dark purple to purple. It grows well in the south, and does not bloom in the northern regions.

Not so thermophilic ipomoea purple. She comes from Central and South America. Also an annual climbing plant up to 3's length.

The shoots and leaves are downy. The flowers are purple-red, but there are varieties and varieties of multi-colored.

For example, the Huber variety has a variegated beater, and the limb is white.

These photos show the Ipomoea “Lear” and “Huber”, described above:

The best modern varieties of Ipomoea:

"Ruby carpet" - with original deep-cut leaves and bright red flowers

"Grandee" with a rich purple color of large flowers

"Blue Star" with blue stripes-rays on white flowers

"Carnivals of Venice" - a mixture of bright flowers with variegated pink and purple stripes

As the ipomoea creeper is exclusively in demand. The disadvantage that has become a virtue is its one-year nature. But as a result, every year you can sow ipomoea in different places.

It can be a test indicator of the feasibility of planting a perennial vine on this site. For the duration of flowering and its airiness, it surpasses other lianas. It blooms from July until frost.

Growing ipomoea: planting and care

When choosing a place for the Ipomoea (wall, pedestal, gazebo, balcony, etc.), preference should be given to southern, eastern and western expositions, northern ones are even less suitable in the south.

The place should be open, well overlooked, not obscured.

When growing Ipomoea do not forget that these flowers are very like watering. It should be abundant and frequent, especially in the hot period. But it is necessary to water in the afternoon, late afternoon.

The soil requires nutrient, but fertilizers are indifferent to fertilizing, and sometimes they even harm, especially nitrogen. The plant then begins to "rage" in growth, but does not bloom.

Fertilizers are useful when planting. If Ipomoea is grown through seedlings, the soil is taken in the following ratio: sod land, humus, sand - 0,5: 1: 0,5 and for every 10 kg of the mixture is added 20 g of potassium salt and superphosphate. Fertilizers contribute to the intense coloring of flowers, in particular blue.

The agropriems for the care of ipomoea flowers are shown in these photos:

Propagated by ipomoea seeds. They are numerous, as attractive flowers are readily visited by bees and fertilization takes place without difficulty. But there is no time left for ripening seeds.

As early as the end of September-October, frosts are possible even in the south, which destroy unripe seeds. Neither the seed metering on the torn out plants, nor the shelter of the vines helps.

Ripe, full-fledged seeds receive only from the first flowers. They are very few, despite the abundant flowering and high-quality fertilization. Practical experience suggested the right decision.

  • First, to grow ipomoea it is necessary to sow seeds very early - in late March - early April
  • Secondly, sow in pots or other containers, abundantly moistening the substrate and covering it with glass. Do not remove it until germination. Third, do not dive the seedlings, but leave them in the same container.

In this case, the ipomoea will begin to bloom earlier by a month or more as compared to those sown in the ground or pulverized. When reducing the area of nutrition (thickened planting), the Ipomoea gives few side shoots, but many flowers on the main one, as if compensating for the lack of abundant green mass.

Ipomeyu blue desirable to grow through seedlings, even in the south. Seedlings should be transplanted with a lump, damage to the root of the morning glory does not like.

Additional recommendations for growing ipomoea from seed are presented in this video:

The use of Ipomoea in garden design

The use of Ipomoea in garden design is the widest. This plant arbors, trellises, fences, pillars, large trees. Ipomeyu can be planted to a wild grape, and then a dense wall of it enlivened delicate flowers. For every square meter there are about a hundred!

When wrapping the supports, one should take into account such a biological feature of the Ipomoea: the ends of its escape grow, making circular counterclockwise movements, forming a spiral. They are looking for support themselves, describing all the large and large circles.

Rotation speed depends on the weather. Hot weather reduces growth. One turn is usually done in 24 hours. Touching the support, the young escape covers it and grows with a “screw”.

To revive the Ipomoea, but rather, to give it a "fire" can be sown with it. fiery red beans. Then it turns out a bright combination - “ice and flame”, and at the same time, the beans will compensate for the lost decorativeness of the morning glory in the evening hours, taking the whole decor on themselves.

Variations in the use of Ipomoea is not considered. This elegant support-lights, and pyramids, and dry trees, and green trellis at the entrance to the room, and the fence between the garden areas, and decorating unsightly places.

This photo shows the use of ipomoea in landscape design:

In flower beds, this is a great background, for example mixborder background or rockaria. The simplest garden devices for Ipomoea - stretched rope or wire. With its help, the plants form the beautiful garland, the framing of the windows, which gives the house a unique comfort.

Simple garden trellises are made of wooden planks 3 cm wide, and for vertical posts old pipes are used.

For one season, you can use old raspberry shoots as a support, if you cut them at the same height and at the same distance, stick them in the ground at an angle.

A complicated lattice version is a trellis, used as wall decor, and a green screen. Bearing poles dropping into a row through 1 — 1,5 m. Crossbars make it easier.

And the use of ipomoea on the site is a disguise of compost heaps: in summer, flowering plants will decorate an unsightly place.
