In this issue, see the photos of the most beautiful species and learn how to grow these tropical plants for your aquarium, garden and home. Cultivation from seeds with all aspects of subsequent care has traditionally been considered, since not all regions have the opportunity to purchase seedlings.
In nature, however, as a cultivated plant species often grow to a height of 25, see Fragile heavily branched stems form a bulky shrub. On the stems opposite there are small leaves of various colors. They are the main decorative element of the plant. When the sun hits the leaves, they can change color and become much brighter.
Flowers, unlike leaves, do not stand out much, the inflorescences are located in the axils of the leaves of the plant and are collected as an ear or head, as shown in the photo below. Still, alternants of florists consider leaves to be the main value, they are much more beautiful than flowers and can have absolutely any color, depending on the type of shrub. In general, many gardeners compare an alternanter with a blazing bonfire that can easily decorate a plot, pond, or aquarium.
The name comes from the Latin word, which has a literal translation of "changeable." The plant can change color depending on how the light falls on it and how bright it is. This is not a visual illusion: alternanthera is a polymorphosis plant, it can change depending on the environment.
Popular and beautiful views Alternantera (with photos)
In Russia, in the open ground grown as an annual, tropical shrubs can not tolerate frost. It is used as a room or aquarium. In total, there are about 200 species alternantera, but only a few are cultivated. We offer to talk about the most popular of them and see photos of beautiful subshrubs. Alternanters that are popular among florists allow you to create beautiful compositions in container culture.
Lilac alternater (Alternanthera lilacina) is a shrub whose name is derived from the color of the leaves. It grows in South America, in our conditions it is rarely possible to see this plant, as it takes root only in conditions when at least half is in the water. For the same reason, it is quite difficult to grow it in an aquarium, because it is not their frequent decoration, although it looks very impressive, be sure to look at the photo below.
The stalk alternantera is a mauve straight, the leaves on it are opposite, it is they that are a decorative ornament. They have an elongated elliptical shape. From the outside, the 5-centimeter leaves are red-green or dark in color, and from the inside, they are burgundy. Flowers are formed above the surface of the water, if you grow a purple alternanthera in aquarium conditions, it can grow to half a meter. You can often find an alternantera named lilacina - this is the purple shrub that can be seen in the photo below.
There are not so many aquarian species of alternantere, one of the most popular, which is well acclimated in closed conditions, is Reinek (Alternanthera reineckii), or also known as mini. Such a plant enchants and fascinates at first sight. It is very similar to the fire of fire, easily settled down in the underwater kingdom. Since this is a rather expressive view, it is often used to create a focus point. The origin of this species is recorded in Brazil and Paraguay. In the natural environment, alternantanera is most often found as a marsh plant and can be calm in submerged places.
In general, the alternatera Reineka mini can be as underwater as a surface plant, all due to the fact that it has a unique stem. In nature, it can reach 50 cm, and in small aquariums it quickly breaks out of the underwater kingdom on 20-25. At the same time, botanists secrete Alternacante Reinek as a plant with creeping stems, possessing properties that are very important for perennial. One of them, which is precisely this part, plays the role of an adaptive part, which allows an alternantre to live, as in water, as on land. Many growers plant this plant in ground conditions, pinching off the tip of perennial, which appears on the surface of the water due to the rapidly developing vertical massive stem. In general, thanks to this part of the plant can survive in nature, both during the floods, and in more arid conditions.
On the stem are not less interesting elongated ellipsoidal leaves. They are located crosswise and grow on 4 pieces, in such a way that opposite leaves are perpendicular to the second pair. As for the sizes, their length usually does not exceed 3,4-4 cm, and the width rarely reaches 1,5 cm. From above, they have the green color common to all plants, but the lower one is often brightly pronounced and has a shade from pink to scarlet red, This can be seen in the photo below. Often, on the stem that protrudes above the surface of the water, air leaves may arise; they can be detrimental to say on the underwater part. Leaves under water will wither and fall away. Botanists and flower growers say that this escape should be tweaked in time. Thus, the underwater alternanthera Reinek in the aquarium will branch and form a neat bush.
In fact, it is sheets that are an important decorative part of any alternantera, and it’s not just a look like Reinek mini. The fact is that the flowers are completely invisible and have a pale yellow or white color. Formed in the sinuses, they are very small. But, if the hybrid varieties, in which the flowers are more expressive.
Even though the Reinek mini alternantera mini seems to be quite a powerful aquarium plant, it is fragile and brittle. That is why, it should be planted on the sides or in the center, but not very bushy. The same applies to the root system, the plant does not tolerate the transplant, since the roots are very fragile and tender, resemble strings.
In general, the Alternanthera Reinek mini is the most popular aquarium plant, but the more solemn view is the type of plant “red” or scientifically - Alternanthera red round. Such a bush is a decoration of any reservoir, but it rarely reaches 20 cm in length. The erect stem has on itself opposite leaves with color - red-green above and bright red and purple below. Red alternanthera is perfect for growing in small aquariums or paludeurium. The fact is that the plant has a fleshy but very slowly growing stem, which should be part of the surface above the water. The beauty of red alternantera is impossible to convey in words, so look at her photo below.
Cultivation and reproduction of alternantera seeds, cuttings and dividing the bush
In fact, reproduction of alternantery, even in open ground, even in aquarium conditions, is a very exciting, but long process that can take up to a year, depending on how exactly this is done. In general, there are three ways to get new bushes - by seed, by dividing a bush or by cutting. The first one is the most energy-consuming and labor-consuming, therefore most often growers use the other two, and this is very common. The fact is that the alternantra is a fairly unpretentious plant and it does not depend on whether it is aquarium or garden. Any species can be propagated in these two ways easily, but not very quickly. For everything you need to have a margin of patience.
Cuttings for breeding and growing new bushes should be cut off in the fall. After that, they must be rooted in the ground. As for the soil for propagation by cuttings, it should be nutritious and with a high content of lime, but it is often said that this is not necessary, since in relation to the earth, the alternantra is not whimsical. Stick cuttings on the level of the first leaf on the shoot, after which you need to form a distributing greenhouse. It is also made quite simple: you can use a wooden box and clear glass, plastic bag or cling film. There must be a very high temperature in the greenhouse.
After the cuttings are dug into the soil, moderate watering should be done before the first new leaflets appear. After that, the plant is removed from the distributing greenhouse and planted in a permanent place in a pot or aquarium. The fact is that it is worth remembering that an alternanthera, if grown in ground conditions when placed in water, can completely discard all the sheets and it may seem that it is starting to fade. But do not be afraid of this, after the plant adapts, it will again delight with its beautiful flowers. If you do not want to mock the shrub, then you can make it a decorative ornament for a terrarium or a palederium, as shown in the photo below.
Many gardeners grow alternantera as an exotic garden plant, but it is worth remembering that it will best take root in such conditions on very moist soil. And, you can multiply this kind by dividing the bush. It happens in the spring. Before this, the plant is carefully transplanted into a separate pot so as not to damage the roots. Further, it needs to be kept all winter at home at a temperature of no more than 15 degrees. In May, the uterine bush can be divided and seated in separate permanent places. Usually, it is customary to plant a cutting on 3-4 or 1-2 parts of the parent plant in one well.
Care for various types of alternantera
It is considered that alternantra is a rather unpretentious plant, but it is worth noting that it completely depends on the form in which it is grown. The fact is that the care of different types may be different. For example, plants grown on land are more fastidious and require more attention than those whose reservoirs have become reservoirs, aquariums and terrariums.
If alternanters have grown as a garden plant, it is worth noting that it will not require certain conditions during wintering. Evergreen in such conditions is often bred as an annual, in regions with severe winters, or not taken into the house. The fact is that during a mild winter, it will not shed its leaves during this period, the only thing that should not be watered and the leaves will change color from lack of sun.
If, however, an alternant is an indoor plant, then it requires a large amount of bright direct or diffused light, depending on the time of year. Also, the content temperature depends on it. Like most plants in the summer alternantors have an active growing season, and in winter they are calm. In the first case, the temperature can vary from 18 to 28 degrees, and in the second, from 10 to 15. As for watering, then just as well, in summer it should be abundant, and in winter moderate. It is not necessary to spray the plant from the spray with water, as with an excess amount of moisture can form gray mold.
If the alternater is an aquarium bush, then care will not be particularly difficult here. It is important that the water is always soft and clean. Also, for such a shrub need to pinch the escape, protruding above the water, otherwise the leaves under water can disappear. In addition, it is worth remembering that the aquarium shrub is very fragile and does not tolerate the dominant number of algae, and transplant is also contraindicated for them.
