For content cactus at home conditions do not require the use of special equipment (greenhouses or aquariums). Room conditions of cacti imply the organization of additional illumination in winter time only for those species that do not go to rest and are preparing for flowering in December and January. The optimum temperature depends on the type of cactus. Basically it varies between parameters from 20 to 25 degrees Celsius. In the summer months, demands on lighting and high air temperatures increase. This, too, should be considered when planning the location a pot with succulent.
How to organize care With the choice of suitable growing conditions for succulents and cacti at home, you can read in this article.
Cacti need sunlight
Cactus needs light and heat; only then can they, with the help of chlorophyll, form carbohydrates from carbon dioxide, air and water, which they absorb by their roots, as a result of photosynthesis. Carbohydrates are needed by plants for further growth and flowering.
Cacti need sunlight, because they come from those areas of our planet, where according to geographic location and height above sea level, and also due to insignificant cloud formation, solar radiation is much more intense than in our latitudes. The spines and hairs, the multiple edges on the stems and the wax layer on the surface of cacti that we like so much are often the means by which the plants are protected from the harmful effects of too intense solar radiation.
If we want the plants to continue to grow beautiful and healthy, we must take care of the right amount of light for them in the culture as well. In case of insufficient illumination, cacti fairly quickly develop unhealthy light green color and thin, weak, strongly stretched shoots.
One should never allow cactuses growing in a compact, squat and powerful way to be tied to pegs as weakened, thin and frail plants.
When describing various locations for cacti, it has already been noted that, although all cacti require light content, there is a certain gradation regarding the need for light.
Despite the fact that the vast majority of cacti prefer a lot of light and sun, in the transition from the dark winter time to the light and sunny spring it is sometimes necessary to tinker a little cacti.
This is especially necessary in the case when cacti were standing in a dark place in winter, for example, on a staircase or even in a basement. At times, a very bright spring sun can lead to serious burns of the epidermis of cacti, disfiguring the appearance of plants. Therefore, it is recommended to transfer the plants to the summer place on an overcast day and at first you should lightly light them on particularly sunny and hot days. This can be done with a thin curtain stretched or placed on a greenhouse. Greenhouse windows can also be covered with a thin layer of chalk paint, or in particularly hot midday hours cover plants with thin tissue paper. However, shading should only soften the sunlight, and not completely retain it, and it is best to use it only during the hottest hours of sunny days. After
cacti will get used to a new place, they can no longer pritenyat.
At what temperature do cacti contain
It is very important to know about which contain temperature Cacti at home in summer and winter. At home, at the disposal of cacti a full spectrum of sunlight with an often completely cloudless and very clear sky. The light of the sun in our major cities is often weakened by a large amount of dust and exhaust gases. Thanks to the glass of our windows or greenhouses, the amount of light decreases even more, especially in the ultraviolet part, which is almost completely absorbed by glass. Therefore, whenever possible, cacti should receive a full spectrum of sunlight.
This is especially important the influence of light and temperature for cacti in late summer and autumn, when the formation of prickles, ripening of shoots and flower buds for subsequent flowering in spring take place. Therefore, in the fall, if the weather permits, it is necessary to open or remove the frame from greenhouses in which cacti grow. That is why growing cacti in summer and autumn, on outside windowsills and in the garden, protected from rain, have especially well developed and beautiful spines, while they look healthy and bloom profusely. In summer, the temperature of the content is 25-30 degrees.
In winter, when growth is completed, almost all cacti have a period of rest, of course, with the exception of winter-blooming species, such as the “Christmas” cactus. It is very good if during the winter period of rest the cacti stand in a bright place; in this case, addiction in the spring to a brighter location is less problematic. In addition, with such wintering, the risk of damage to plants by fungal infections is much less, and in the species that bloom in early spring, flower buds develop better. In winter, the temperature of the content of cacti is 18 - 25 degrees.
However, during the resting period, cacti can winter in dark places as well, for example, in a dim staircase or in a basement. In this case, the plants should be in cool and dry conditions so that they do not grow. On warm days, it is recommended from time to time to air well the rooms where the cacti overwinter.
Artificial lighting for cacti
When cacti overwinter, for example, in a dark basement, artificial light can provide a minimal amount of light. True, artificial illumination for cacti of ordinary species — for example, with the help of fluorescent lamps — is not required in winter, since at this time they are at rest. During the growing season, artificial lighting for cacti is useless: it is absolutely impossible, even remotely, to replace in the dark place the intense solar radiation required by cacti with fluorescent lamps or some other source of artificial light. The only exceptions are forest cacti, such as various species of the genus ripsalis. As with the cultivation of orchids that come from the same places, artificial lighting can be very useful for plants that bloom in winter during the dark season. If these cacti are cultivated along with tilladcia and orchids in a closed flower window or a flower shop window, then properly selected and placed artificial lighting stimulates the growth of plants and emphasizes their beauty.
