Money plant: differences from epipremnum and cultivation

Lovers of lianas certainly paid attention to the beautiful climbing plant with leaves in the shape of a heart. This is a creeper, popularly called epipremnum. But the identification of epipremnum and sindapsus is not entirely true. They are 2 of various genus of perennial herbaceous vines, family Arousae (Araceae). However, many of their specimens have a large external similarity to such an extent that some species of one plant began to be attributed to the varieties of another (for example, the species Scindapsus aureus, now called Epipremnum aureus, was previously isolated).

Differences between room creep and epindremnum creeper

Titles "Epipremnum" и "Sindapsus" display the places of growth of crops in nature. At home (Solomon Islands in the Pacific Ocean, as well as the tropical forests of the Malay Archipelago, the Malay Peninsula) they grow on tree trunks or on the ground.

Take a look at the photos of varieties of money sticks and epipremnums with official names:

They reflect how different species of these plants look in natural and domestic conditions.

Of course, in nature, cultures develop much faster and grow much more. Although room sleepers can reach lengths of 1,5 m and epipremnum more than 3 m. At home, in order for the plant to have more space, you can hang the pot high and even stick a stick or “ladder” into the ground around which the stems can curl.

The main difference between the room vines of epipremnum and scandus is leaves. If the first one has a symmetrical sheet, then the second one has a curved sheet that resembles a comma a little (some species have bright, multi-colored compacted sheets, for example, a painted sketch). But while the principles of care for both are similar, so you can study them at the same time.

Household climbing plant (like Epipremnum - Epipremnum) is a beautiful alpine plant that with age can form shoots up to 10 m long and cover the entire wall or ceiling. But more often there are young specimens of a cricket with heart-shaped leaves with a golden pattern on a green background. Money plant is also known as rapidophora (Rhapidophora).

The creeper grows very quickly, for 1 a year its stems are able to grow more than 1 m. The main rhizome is fibrous. At the same time, the plant has smooth, spiny-free monopoid stems, which are full of small roots. The latter are trying to develop and develop into an additional root system, receiving additional nourishment from the soil. This is perfectly feasible if the environment is favorable.

The aerial roots of the indoor epipremnum vines and the sincapsus are of two types:

  • Clinging to the tree (appear from the nodes).
  • Feeding (appear from internodes).

Over time, the first become cork, and the second - woody, having a bark divided into ribbon-like fibers.

In the wild, the plant blooms when it has “adult” leaves. Since the indoor flowers epipremnum and seedlings do not have such foliage, at home the flowering of these crops is extremely rare. Inflorescences are solitary or gathered together. Initially, the first of these usually develops in the leaf bosom or the rapidly fading underdeveloped renal leaf. In the latter, the following inflorescences may develop. Flowers plants dioecious, bare, with white, pinkish and red color.

Take a look at the photo with the image of an exotic flower of a creeper: the small flowers gathered in the ear are replaced with a berry with a lot of seed.

Agree, such a miracle of nature in its flower garden with great pleasure would watch every gardener, but destined to see only the elect. At the same time, even the foliage of vines is quite beautiful, which attracts gardeners - both beginners and experienced.

Caution! The plant (all its parts) contains substances that irritate the skin and mucous membranes.

Types of houseplant plants: photos and names of species

In nature, 25 scandus plant species are distinguished, differing in leaf shape and color. All of them have the appearance of a climbing vine, and can grow both on tree trunks and on the ground. Many varieties of this representative of the family Aroids as a result of the work of breeders have undergone some changes, resulting in the emergence of new varieties.

Among cultivated at home, there are several main varieties of this culture. Here are some names of the plant species Scandusus grown at home:

Scindapsus pictus

Scindapsus aureus

Scindapsus n joy

Scindapsus neon

Scindapsus Marble Queen

Scindapsus pictus grows in natural conditions on tree trunks (reaching the length of the stems over 2,5-3 m) in tropical latitudes of Malaysia and Indonesia. This is one of the most popular varieties of plants, grown at home. You can see what this culture looks like in the photo below:

Stems grow quickly, their length, even artificially grown, can reach 0,8-1 m, and on small petioles they leave large oval, slightly elongated leaves of variegated color. Thick green is punctuated with silver-gray patches located on the outside of the sheet. It is quite resistant to diseases and pests.

A common species among gardeners is Scindapsus aureus (or in a new way Epipremnum aureus).

Photos of this type of power supply are shown below:

It differs from other varieties of this culture with unusual emerald leaves with yellow (golden) splashes. If the room is bright enough, it creates a feeling as if they shimmer with different shades: yellow, golden, green. It is important to monitor the plant, which is quite susceptible to diseases and pests.

Scindapsus n joy has Dutch roots. Most common among private collections and in greenhouses. It takes up quite a bit of space. In this case, the best vine will feel in a suspended flowerpot. Take a look at the photo with the name of this type of plant, as shown below: the image shows that the culture has a curly stem and bright emerald leaves with silver-gray inclusions, located mainly along the edge of the sheets:

The houseplant called Scinapsus Neon, shown in the photo below, stands out against the background of its relatives with bright-green foliage and stems of the same shade:

Small leaves grow on climbing stems, connecting with them through rather long petioles. This type has the ability to go very quickly in growth, so it must be regularly cut.

Scindapsus Marble Queen - this species of houseplant scandusus depicted in the photo below has silver-white leaves with small veins of greenery:

One gets the impression that droplets are splashed chaotically all over the sheet or light strokes are applied, similar to marble (which gave another name to the plant - the Marble Queen). Thanks to this color effect is created, as if the leaves are constantly in motion. It is necessary to grow up this liana in a suspended cache-pot or a basket.

Care for indoor flower scandalsus growing at home

Care for household money growing, according to experts, is quite simple. Therefore, even newly-made flower growers can start such a culture. It is important for her to have a location:

If the plant has little light, then the leaves become pure green, and over time, if the situation is not corrected, the vine will drop foliage. To avoid burns on the foliage due to direct sunlight, it is necessary to create diffused lighting.

The temperature for normal growth of the creeper species should be up to 24 ° С, but not lower than 16 ° С, the roots must be kept warm. In summer, the plant will suit the indoor climate, it does not need the high temperatures of the tropics. In winter, the culture should not be placed near the battery, otherwise the leaves will dry and become covered with brown spots. In the warm season it is possible to carry out a pot of culture on the balcony to air.

Important! Does not transfer drafts. In cold weather do not open the window.

Water the plant should be regularly from spring to autumn. Watering should be arranged as follows: the cooler, the less water. It is preferable to use non-cold distilled water. Before the next watering you need to wait until the soil dries out.

It is also necessary in the warm season to spray water from the spray in the morning and evening on the leaves to increase the humidity. Required air humidity: carries dry air, although it feels better if the air in the room is sufficiently humidified (50-60% moisture).

Top dressing with liquid mineral fertilizers for flowers: in the summer - every week, in the winter - once in 4 weeks. After planting, plant nutrition is not needed, because The new soil has all the required nutrients.

How can i propagate scandapsus (with video)

It is impossible to circumvent the issues of planting, breeding, and replanting, talking about the care of the household at home. Like all ampelous plants, it is best to grow money plant in a hanging flowerpot or give the opportunity to wriggle along a wall or in a tube with moss. For them, suitable low pots with a small amount of soil. Capacity with a plant can be established in the pallet with wet expanded clay.

The soil for the culture should be well loosened, fertile, neutral or low acidity. Planting vines can occur in the garden land, peat and large river sand or in the composition of turf and leaf soil, sand (in proportions 1: 3: 1). Another possible substrate: floral soil mixture.

Studying how to multiply the creep, it should be remembered that such a procedure can be carried out at any time of the year and in two ways:

  • Apical and stem cuttings.
  • The division of escape and layering.

It is best to give preference to cuttings of the tops, easily rooted in water or wet ground at air temperatures of at least 20 ° C and dimly diffused light. In order to root the plant more quickly in the soil, its roots should be treated with a growth-stimulating agent.

Reproduction of creeper vine cuttings by cuttings is carried out by cutting the cutting with 2-3 sheets under the place where the leaf (node) is attached. Here in the future will appear small new roots. After planting in the ground it is worth making a glass or polyethylene cap for the plant. Such a shelter will serve as a greenhouse. Rooting of the plant will occur within 2-3 weeks.

Transfer: if necessary.

Replant the culture should be in the spring. For young seedlings you can organize transplantation every year, and for those that are older - once a year in 2-3. This procedure should be carried out as the plant grows into new vases. If it does not need a transplant, you can only replace the top ball of the soil. It is not worth to grow plants in the same soil for a long time - useful substances leave it.

If the information provided on how to grow this plant is not enough, watch the video about caring for scrubs:

After viewing this material, there will be no questions about what activities need to be carried out in order for the plant to grow beautiful, curly and enjoy its appearance.

Why leaves fall with yellow leaves: plant diseases and pests

Some species of seedlings are easily subject to various negative factors leading to the death of the plant. Such pests and diseases attack the culture:

Spider mite.

Yellowing leaves.

Root rot.

Getting rid of harmful insects will help washing the damaged parts of the culture with a solution of laundry soap under cool water. If the proposed method does not help, you can treat the affected parts with special chemicals (Actellic, Intavir).

Novice gardeners are often interested in why their leaves grow yellow. It all depends on what color the leaf changes to. If the bright green color is simply lost, the foliage becomes pale, then this indicates that the culture is in too bright a place, it must be rearranged into the interior.

Sometimes it happens and vice versa: initially colorful leaves they become bright emerald and at the same time small in size - it means that there is not enough light liana, it is necessary to put it on the windowsill or raise it higher.

When the foliage turns yellow and falls on a leaflet, it can be a simple extinction as a result of aging.

Root rot is the most common disease that affects not only the root system of a plant, but also its aerial part. If black leaves appear on the leaves and base, indicating the presence of the disease, you should immediately pull the plant out of the pot, wash the rhizome, remove the rotted parts. In places where there was a defeat of the culture, processing is carried out with potassium permanganate.

It happens so that the leaves on the leaves grow yellow, but do not fade. This suggests that liana lacks nutrients. It is necessary to feed the plant with liquid fertilizers to eliminate this problem.
